Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been tied to the USC football job.

While most people expect Eric Bieniemy to be an NFL head coach one day, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator is now being tied to the recent vacancy within the USC football program.

With Clay Helton getting the ax abruptly on Monday evening, USC is casting a wide net to see if they can get the right head coach to lead their football team. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Bieniemy is a candidate for it. The Southern California native has said privately that he would be interested in taking over at USC. Keep in mind that he could have led his alma mater at Colorado.

Bieniemy may be a candidate for USC, but I don’t think we should buy into this even one little bit.

KC Chiefs: Eric Bieniemy is a candidate to be the next head coach of USC football

While Bieniemy has experience at the college level, it was with his alma mater over two stints nearly a decade ago as a running backs coach (2001-02) and then later as the offensive coordinator (2011-12) under then-new head coach Jon Embree. He also served on Karl Dorrell’s staff at UCLA from 2003-05. Interestingly enough, Dorrell is now the man in charge of Colorado.

Even if he is interested in the job, there is no chance USC would have fired Helton in mid-season to give the job to an NFL assistant who has never been a head coach before. While Bieniemy could make it work in Los Angeles, he is best served staying on Andy Reid’s staff as the Chiefs offensive coordinator and waiting until he gets the right opportunity to lead an NFL team down the line.

We have to give Bieniemy’s representation credit for getting his name into the mix for the USC job.
