Nicky Butt has told Manchester United they should drop their interest in Declan Rice, opening the door for Chelsea to get a deal done.
The Red Devils are said to be among the top candidates to sign Rice from West Ham this transfer window amid speculation that he wants to make that step up in the game and play for one of the biggest clubs.
Chelsea have long been linked with a move for Rice, but with the interest from the Red Devils reportedly increasing, it has been claimed that the Blues board do not want to get into a bidding war with the Manchester Giants.
But amid the speculation, Former United midfielder Butt believes they have enough options in midfield already and told the United board not to make a move to try and sign Rice this transfer window.
“For me, next season has to be about getting some silverware back in that trophy cabinet,” said Butt, who served as United’s head of first-team development before leaving the club in March.
“It’s about getting the right players who will allow you to challenge for trophies. It’s a winning club, so we can’t go this long without silverware.
“I think Man Utd are solid enough in midfield. I keep hearing things about Declan Rice, but is he a better player than Scott McTominay?
“I’m not sure; I think with McTominay, Paul Pogba and obviously Bruno Fernandes, we’re in a good place in the middle of the park.”
Look, it will be interesting to see where he ends up this transfer window, but do Chelsea even need the man?
