Kounde can play for big clubs, Kirby signs Chelsea contract and duo tell Chelsea they want to leave the Bridge in Chelsea roundup…
Fran Kirby has signed a new contract with Chelsea, which will keep the England international striker with the Blues until the summer of 2023.
The 27-year-old has established herself as one of the most fearsome attacking forces in English women’s football over recent years. Since moving to Chelsea, she has scored 62 goals in 97 appearances in all competitions for her club.
She has been in magnificent form this campaign, scoring 15 goals in 21 Women’s Super League (WSL) games to fire Chelsea to the summit of England’s top division, and she has announced just how delighted she is with the new deal
She told the Chelsea website: “I’ve been a part of this club for a very long time, and it didn’t take much thought. I knew where I wanted to be, and I think you could see that in my performances.
“I was really trying to prove to myself, to the fans who haven’t been able to watch me for a long time and to the club. It was a no-brainer for me that I wanted to stay in this environment.
“I really wanted to work and prove that I was worthy of a new contract. I’ve spent a lot of time out ill and I remember speaking to Emma at the start of the year and I said I didn’t want anything given to me, I wanted to earn my spot to play, I wanted to earn my spot to be involved with this team and stay in this team.
“That’s been a massive goal of mine this season and I want to keep doing that. I’ve signed a new contract, but I want to make sure that I keep pushing myself every day and, as long as I keep doing that, I know that I’ll be in a good place.”
Chelsea fans have been left stunned with reports that Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic want to leave the club in the video right below, plus big Cristiano Ronaldo news….
Reported Chelsea target Jules Kounde “can play for great European clubs”, says Diego Carlos,
Big-money bids for the 22-year-old centre-half are being mooted heading towards the summer transfer window, with reports in the media suggesting that Thomas Tuchel is keen to improve that back-line he has.
Liverpool have also been mooted as a possible landing spot for Kounde, with Jurgen Klopp expected to target another centre-half in the next window after seeing his options at Anfield decimated by injury this season.
Carlos told the Daily Mail when quizzed on Kounde’s potential: “Yes, he has quality and he can play for great European clubs.
“He is a young player who can still improve over time, he has got great qualities, he is very strong and I am sure he can play for a big club as a great defender. We have good communication on and off the pitch and we have a good relationship.
“To have a strong defence, we also need all the other players to help us and we can help them to attack, so Kounde really looks to attack too and like all the other midfielders, we all help each other and we are a good team in attack and defence.”
Chelsea will need to improve that defence in the summer transfer window, and although Kounde is very talented, the Blues would still need to go out and add a premium centre-back to the squad.
He is not yet ready to help lead the Chelsea back-line, which Tuchel will need for next season.
